Course development for LearnWorlds: what it actually takes

LearnWorlds is a course-creation and LMS platform built around Sections and Learning Activities, its native building blocks for video, ebooks, assessments, SCORM packages, LTI tools, and live sessions. Building a course for LearnWorlds involves two separate jobs: using the platform's own course builder, and the instructional design, packaging, and accessibility work that has to happen before content goes anywhere near it.

The building blocks

How does LearnWorlds structure a course?

Every LearnWorlds course is built from two building blocks, per LearnWorlds' own documentation: Sections and Learning Activities. Sections are the folders. Each one groups related content and carries a status, draft, soon, free, or paid, that controls what a learner can see and when. Learning Activities are what actually sits inside a section: a video, an ebook, an assessment, a SCORM package, a live session, and so on.

In practice, you build a course from the Course outline tab: add sections to organize the material, then click Add Activity to drop content into each one. It is a genuinely flexible authoring model, and it's the same structure whether you're building a five-lesson onboarding course or a forty-hour certification track. What it doesn't do is tell you what belongs in those sections, in what order, or why. That's a separate discipline, and it's where most course builds actually go wrong.

Native capabilities

What can you build natively inside LearnWorlds?

As of 2026, LearnWorlds' own toolkit covers most of what a course needs without a second piece of software.

Interactive video & ebooks

The interactive video editor layers questions, hotspots, and branching onto a video timeline. Ebooks are their own activity type for text-heavy material, authored inside the platform rather than uploaded as static PDFs.

Assessments & exams

The assessment builder supports 16+ question types, including multiple choice, matching, short answer, and media-based responses, plus timed exams, randomized question pools, and self-assessments that don't count toward a grade.

SCORM & HTML5 packages

SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004 (3rd and 4th Edition), and Captivate CAM 1.3 packages upload as ZIP files, up to 400MB each. Upload limits scale with plan tier, so confirm yours before committing to a SCORM-heavy course.

LTI 1.3 activities

LearnWorlds connects to external learning tools over LTI 1.3, including grade passback, so a simulation or lab hosted elsewhere can sit inside a LearnWorlds course and report a score back to it.

Live sessions

Live Sessions are a first-class activity type, for cohort-based teaching, office hours, or a graded webinar scheduled directly into the course outline alongside recorded content.

AI-assisted outline generation

The Course Creation Wizard can generate a course title, description, and a starting outline of sections and activities from a topic prompt. It's a fast first draft, not a finished instructional design.

Certificates round out the native toolkit: they're their own activity type, unlocked on completion and available afterward from the learner's profile page. They can gate on program paths, so a final certificate only issues once every required course underneath it is finished.

Beyond the platform

What does a course build involve beyond LearnWorlds' own tools?

None of that toolkit decides what belongs in the course. That work happens before a single Section gets created.

Learning objectives and structure. What should a learner be able to do after this course that they couldn't do before? Sections and activities should map to that answer, not to a table of contents lifted from a subject-matter expert's slide deck.

Storyboarding. Activity-by-activity planning of what appears, what's asked, and what happens on a wrong answer, reviewed and signed off before build work starts. It's the same discipline we apply on every course through our course design and development work, LearnWorlds or otherwise.

SCORM and xAPI packaging. If content needs to live somewhere other than LearnWorlds eventually, or report activity to a separate Learning Record Store, it gets packaged as a portable SCORM or xAPI object rather than built as native LearnWorlds activities that don't travel. LearnWorlds accepts SCORM uploads well; it isn't built to package your content out to an external LRS, so that packaging happens outside the platform, before upload.

Assessment design with real distractor rationale. A multiple-choice question with three throwaway wrong answers doesn't test anything. Distractors should represent plausible misconceptions, so a wrong answer tells you something about what the learner actually misunderstood, not just that they guessed.

Accessibility and WCAG. LearnWorlds offers an accessiBe overlay widget for the school's website and course player, which helps with the shell around your content. It doesn't fix contrast, missing captions, alt text, or keyboard navigation inside an uploaded file, an embedded video, or a SCORM package. Those get built in during content development, not patched on afterward.

The decision

When is the wizard enough, and when do you need a partner?

The Course Creation Wizard is enough when

The course is a single, self-contained topic. One person owns the content and the review cycle. The timeline is flexible. And nobody needs the output to leave LearnWorlds as a portable SCORM or xAPI package. Plenty of internal training and single-instructor cohort courses fit that description cleanly.

A partner earns its keep when

The program is a multi-course certification track with prerequisites and a final assessment. Several SMEs need to be interviewed, reconciled, and kept from contradicting each other. The timeline is tight enough that design and build have to run in parallel. Or the content has to be packaged as SCORM or xAPI so it can port to another LMS or report to an LRS later.

Frequently asked questions

No, not for native LearnWorlds content. Sections, Learning Activities, the assessment builder, and the Course Creation Wizard are all built for non-developers. You need development skills only for SCORM/xAPI packaging if you want portability outside LearnWorlds, custom LTI tool integrations, or interactive video and ebook builds that go beyond the built-in editors.
It's a useful starting point, not a replacement. The Course Creation Wizard can draft a title, description, and a first pass at sections and activities from a topic prompt. It doesn't know your learners, your assessment strategy, or whether the resulting structure actually teaches the skill you're after. Most teams treat the AI draft as a scaffold that an instructional designer then rebuilds around real learning objectives.
